Business and policymakers around the globe are waking up to the scope of the global warming crisis. With this crisis comes great opportunity: we have the technology and capital to support the transition to the next energy paradigm—the global implementation of 100-percent renewable energy.
In 2015, the World Business Academy proposed the Clean Energy Moonshot to help catalyze this shift. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 “moonshot” challenge to land a man on the moon and return him safely by the end of the decade, the Academy put forward a similarly ambitious challenge: 100-percent carbon-free, nuclear-free electricity in California within 10 years.
Central to the Clean Energy Moonshot was the Academy’s conviction that renewable community microgrids are essential to California’s energy future. The initiative envisioned a transition away from dependence on a centralized electric grid toward a cleaner, more resilient and distributed energy system built around renewable generation and community microgrids.
The Clean Energy Moonshot was one chapter in the Academy’s longstanding work on microgrids and distributed renewable energy. For many years, the Academy has advocated for microgrids through its research, writing, public speaking, projects, and support for their broader adoption.
That work continues today as the Academy explores and advocates for the role microgrids can play in creating a cleaner, more resilient and sustainable energy system.
